Reduplication of *ṗer- (to fly), ultimately with onomatopoeic intent, compare synonymous Abkhaz аԥарԥалыкь (aparpaləkʲʼ), ахьчԥаԥыр (axʲčpapər), as well as Italian parpaglia and Bulgarian пеперу́да (peperúda).
