From Proto-Indo-European *h₁rp-i-, from *h₁rep- (“to snatch”). Compare Albanian rrjep (“to tear away, rob”), Ancient Greek ἐρέπτομαι (eréptomai, “to devour, snatch away”), Lithuanian ap-répti (“to take, catch”).
