From Proto-Indo-European *h₁rp-i-, from *h₁rep- (to snatch). Compare Albanian rrjep (to tear away, rob), Ancient Greek ἐρέπτομαι (eréptomai, to devour, snatch away), Lithuanian ap-répti (to take, catch).
