Etymology

Uncertain; presumably cognate with Ancient Greek ὠκύς (ōkús, “fast, swift”), Latin ōcior (“swifter”), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₃eHḱ-ú-s, *h₁oHḱ-ú-s, perhaps related to *h₁éḱwos (“horse”).[1]
