From Pre-Germanic *strongʰos, an adjective formed from the strong verb *stringaną,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *strengʰ- (pulled tight, straight, constricted), from Proto-Indo-European *ster- (stiff, rigid). Cognate with Latvian strangs (brave, brisk, fresh).
