From Proto-Indo-European *lāp-, *lēp-, *lep- (“to be flat”). Cognate with Lithuanian lopa (“paw, claw”), Proto-Slavic *lapa, dialectal Armenian լափ (lapʻ), լուփ (lupʻ, “palm, flat of the hand”).
