Disputed. Either from Proto-Indo-European *kew-, *ḱew- (skin, cuticle, hide; beauty, splendour) or from Proto-Indo-European *ḱyeh₁- (grey, dark shade), or a merger of the two. Compare Sanskrit छवि (chavi, skin, beauty).
