From Proto-Indo-European *h₃émbʰō ~ *h₃m̥bʰnés (< *h₃énbʰ-on-), variant of *h₃nobʰ-, whence also *nabō (nave) and *nabalô ~ *nabulô (navel). Compare Latin umbō (boss (of a shield)) (< *h₃nbʰ-n-).
