From Pre-Germanic *ápōkʷos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂époh₃kʷos, with alteration based on adjectives in *-ugaz. Cognate with Sanskrit अपाञ्च् (ápāñc, “located backwards, behind”), Serbo-Croatian ȍpāk (“wicked, evil”).
