Etymology

From Proto-Finno-Ugric *säppä. The development *ä-ä > *a-i is found in most applicable words of Uralic or Finno-Ugric pedigree, such as *talvi, *pooli, *loomi, and according to Zhivlov (2014), it is perhaps regular.
