Etymology
From earlier *purjëš, borrowed from
- Proto-Germanic *buriz (“fair wind”)
- or a Baltic source (compare Lithuanian burė, Latvian bura) – though the direction of borrowing could also be opposite.
Cognate with Proto-Samic *porjës (“sail”).
