Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *mh₂ḱwos, from *meh₂ḱ- (to raise, grow). Compare Latin macer (lean, thin), Ancient Greek μακρός (makrós, long, tall), Proto-Germanic *magraz (lean, meager).[1]
