From Proto-Indo-European *dʰerg- (“to dim, darken”); compare Old English deorc (“dark”) and Tocharian A tärkär, Tocharian B tarkär (“cloud”). Akin to Lithuanian drėgti (“to get damp, wet”) and possibly Proto-Balto-Slavic *dárˀgāˀ (“bad weather”).
