Proto-Celtic

Etymology

Either from *bā-rigos (cow-tying) (*bāus + *rigos) as theorized by Hamp, or from a Proto-Indo-European compound *bʰeh₂-h₃reǵos (light-extending), from *bʰeh₂- (to shine) and *h₃reǵ- (to straighten), as theorized by Matasovic who rejects Hamp's theory as semantically far-fetched. If the latter theory is correct, then *bāregos was originally an adjective that referred to dawn.
