Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₁eh₂n- (“ring”). Cognate with Latin ānus (“ring, anus”) and Old Armenian անուր (anur, “ring, necklace”). Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *yeh₃s- (“belt, girdle”); compare Ancient Greek ζώνη (zṓnē), Old Church Slavonic (по)ꙗсъ ((po)jasŭ), Lithuanian júosta.
