Unknown. Cognate Proto-Germanic *wahsą (wax). Pokorny suggests Proto-Indo-European *wokso, *wos-ko- (wax), *weg- (to weave), or *webʰ- (to weave).[1] It could instead be from a pre-Indo-European substrate.[2]
