Unknown. Cognate Proto-Germanic *wahsą (“wax”). Pokorny suggests Proto-Indo-European *wokso, *wos-ko- (“wax”), *weg- (“to weave”), or *webʰ- (“to weave”).[1] It could instead be from a pre-Indo-European substrate.[2]
