From Proto-Indo-European *h₁rebʰ-ró-m, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rebʰ- (“to cover, to roof; rib”); cognate with Proto-Germanic *ribją (“rib; reef, ridge”) and Proto-Hellenic *erépʰō (“to cover, provide with a roof”).
