From Proto-Indo-European *swet- (“self; one's own”), from *swé; compare Lithuanian svetỹs (“foreigner”), Russian сват (svat, “matchmaker; father-in-law”), Attic Greek ἔτης (étēs, “relative, friend”), Elean Greek ϝέτας (wétas). Related to u. Closely related to Messapic veinan (“his, one's”).
