Pokémaniac
English
Etymology
Blend of Pokémon + maniac. Derived from "POKéMANIAC", the name of a class of opponent characters in-game. The characters are nowadays seen donning cosplay pieces resembling the Pokémon creatures (though originally wearing lab coats and portrayed as being somewhat lunatic). "POKéMANIAC" was the term used in the English translation for the aforementioned, originally called 「かいじゅうマニア」 [kaijuumania] ("monster maniac") in Japanese. Equivalent to Poké- + maniac.
Usage notes
Earlier games in the series typically styled the term as "POKéMANIAC". In recent instalments, the term is styled as "Poké Maniac". "Pokémaniac" is common in unofficial usage.
