From earlier *Parkainen (compare borrowed Swedish Pargas), probably derived from an unknown stem *parka- which has been variously connected with a substrate word meaning "sand field" and Finnish parka (poor, someone pitiful).

  • IPA(key): /ˈpɑrɑi̯nen/, [ˈpɑ̝rɑ̝i̯ne̞n]
  • Rhymes: -ɑrɑinen
  • Syllabification(key): Pa‧rai‧nen

Proper noun

Parainen

  1. Pargas (a town in Southwest Finland)

Usage notes

  • In Finnish, the correct inflection of placenames is determined by the local practice. Parainen is a singular word, but it is inflected in plural. However, in partitive and translative also singular is used.

Declension

The external locative cases (adessive, allative and ablative) are used with this place name when referring to a location; for example, "in Parainen" is Paraisilla.
