Etymology

First attested as scoeten and scoten in 1299. Calque of West Frisian Aldskoat, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian ald (old) and scâta (piece of land which juts upward). The element âld was added to distinguish the settlement from Nieuweschoot.
