Etymology

First attested as in hamaritda around 800-850. Likely a compound of op (upriver) and Old Dutch hamar (stone, rock) with collectivising suffix -itja-. The element op was added later to distinguish the settlement from Nederhemert-Noord and Nederhemert-Zuid. Compare Hemmerde and Hemmerden.
