Etymology

Oost is first attested as oys in 1140. Maarland is first attested as marlant in 1330. Oost is likely derived from Proto-Germanic *agwjô (land next to a watercourse). Maarland is derived from a compound of Middle Dutch maar (lake, pool) and land (land). Formerly an independent village and hamlet.
