Etymology
Borrowed from Norwegian Onstad, named after several farmsteads in Norway, many of which were prefixed with Old Norse names followed by staðr (“farmstead”); for example, Augunarstaðir (“Auðun's farm”), from auðr (“wealth”) + un (“friend”) (see vinr) + staðr.

- According to the 2010 United States Census, Onstad is the 33810th most common surname in the United States, belonging to 673 individuals. Onstad is most common among White (94.35%) individuals.
