Bavarian
Etymology
From Middle High German ei, from Proto-Germanic *ajją. The diphthong oa is the regular Bavarian outcome of Middle High German ei (through a process of continuous backing/rounding of the onset and lowering of the offset; roughly [ɛi̯] > [äe̯] > [ɒɛ̯] > [oa̯]). The original plural was Oar, but -r is lost after oa in many dialects.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /oa̯/
Plautdietsch
