Usage notes
The abbreviation is frequently used after friars' names as a postnominal indicating their affiliation with the Franciscans. Depending on the style guide, such abbreviations may be set off with commas or parentheses or not, use periods or not, or be presented in small caps or not. Use of OFM is also sometimes restricted particularly to the Observants, with the Capuchins being distinguished as OFM Cap, Conventuals as OFM Conv, and the Tertiaries as TOR. Other sources specify every branch, with the Observants distinguished as OFM Obs.
