Etymology
First attested as hoerne cum duabus capellis in 1315. Calque of West Frisian Nijhoarne, derived from a compound of Old Frisian nia (“new”) and hern (“corner of a levee”). The element nij was added to distinguish the settlement from Oudehorne.
