Etymology

First attested as nederassel in 1301. Compound of neder (lower, downstream) and a compound of Old Dutch asc (ash, Fraxinus excelsior) and lo (light forest). The element neder is a late addition to distinguish the settlement from Overasselt. Compare Assel and Asselt.
