Little Downham

English

Etymology

Recorded as Duneham in 1086 (Domesday Book).

Proper noun

Little Downham

  1. A village in Downham parish, East Cambridgeshire district, Cambridgeshire, England (OS grid ref TF5283).

Usage notes

The parish (council?) was apparently renamed from Downham to Little Downham in the 19th century to distinguish it from Downham parish in Norfolk, which became Downham Market after that. The parish is served by Little Downham Parish Council. However, the Ordnance Survey still uses the name Downham for the civil parish in Cambridgeshire.
