First attested as liindonck in 1299. Compound of either Middle Dutch lijn (flax, Linum usitatissimum) or a lost phytonym cognate to Old Norse hlynr (Norway maple, Acer platanoides) and Old English hlyne (Norway maple, Acer platanoides) and donk (sandy hill protruding above a marsh).
