From Middle High German krāpe (also krape, krappe, but the Luxembourgish -o- requires an originally long vowel), from Old High German crāppo, northern variant of chrāpho (“hook”), from Proto-Germanic *krappô, *krāppô. Cognate with Yiddish קרעפּל (krepl), German Krapfen, Dutch krap.
