  1. (Ireland, dated) A certificate awarded to Irish students who passed the state examinations at the end of the third or fourth year of a voluntary secondary school or boarding school.

In regular speech and writing the term Inter Cert is almost always preferred even in formal registers.

  1. The Intermediate Certificate was completely abolished in place of the Junior Certificate in 1992. People who were in secondary school before 1992 may still refer to the Junior Certificate as the Intermediate Certificate.
