From Latin Iberia, from Ancient Greek Ἰβηρία (Ibēría), after the river Ἴβηρος (Íbēros), which itself came from a native Celtiberian name for the river *Ibēr (modern Spanish Ebro). Cognate with Galician and Spanish Iberia, Catalan Ibèria.
