Potentially attested as Groote Heug and Klyne Heug in 1803-1820, attested with certainty as den Huy in 1838-1857. Etymology unknown. Potentially related to dialectal hui (whey), the dialectal expression hui drinken (to do poorly, to fare ill) (here as a reference to soil quality), or hui (owl). Compare Huijbergen.
