Etymology
Attested as hordijk in 1446. Compound of the toponym Hordijk (potentially derived from a compound of Middle Dutch horn (“corner, sharp bend”) and dyc (“levee”) or, alternatively, from *hordendijk (“levee reinforced with osier screens”)) and veld (“field”). Hordijk was an independent hamlet before being absorbed by Rotterdam.
