Etymology

First attested as huclem in 1192. Compound of hoog (high, upper) and a secondary compound derived from Proto-Germanic *hukila (hill, elevated place) and heem (home, settlement). The element hoog was added to distinguish the settlement from Laag-Heukelom. Compare Heukelom, Heukelum and Hoekelum.
