Etymology

First attested as huclem in 1192. Compound of hoog (“high, upper”) and a secondary compound derived from Proto-Germanic *hukila (“hill, elevated place”) and heem (“home, settlement”). The element hoog was added to distinguish the settlement from Laag-Heukelom. Compare Heukelom, Heukelum and Hoekelum.
