- (a resident of Hawaii): This sense is avoided almost universally by residents of Hawaii and those familiar with residents of Hawaii. It is best avoided in all contexts. Use "Hawaii resident" instead for non-ethnic Hawaiians. Additionally, since 2016, according to the United States Government Publishing Office Style Manual, the term Hawaii resident must be used in all official government documents to refer to natives or residents of Hawaii.[1]
