From Latin Guntiari, genitive of Guntiarius, from a Suevic or Gothic personal name, from a compound *Gunþiharjaz, from Proto-Germanic *gunþiz (battle) and *harjaz (army, warrior).[1] Compate with German Günther and Old Norse Gunnar.
