Etymology
From Old Norse Gauti, a weak form of Gautr; from gauti, gautr (“Geat”). Originally a byname, and also a short form of names with the element. Cognate with Faroese Geyti, Icelandic Gauti, Swedish Göte, and Danish Gøde.
