From Proto-Aslian *gop (“guest”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *gəp ~ *gap (“friend; to associate”); cognate with Bahnar gơ̆p (“people; someone”), Koho göp (“companion, comrade, neighbor”), Khmer គប់ (kup, “to befriend, associate with”).
