From Middle High German vriunt, from Old High German friund, northern variant of friunt. The forms with -ö- (and Moselle Franconian -e-) imply a rather early shortening of the vowel.

Frönd m (plural Frönn or Frönde, diminutive Fröndche)

   He’s a good friend of mine.

• The plural Frönn is used in most of those southern Ripuarian dialects in which Frönd is the native form of the word. The plural Frönde is used in dialects that have replaced native Frönk with Frönd.
