First attested as in elpe in 1362. Likely derived from an ancient hydronym, which may derive in turn from a compound of a term cognate to Gothic aljan (diligence, zeal) and Proto-Germanic *apa (current, watercourse). Compare Aalden, Eelde and Elpe.
