First attested as theothorne in 838. Compound derived from either Proto-Germanic *þeudô- (people, mass) or Old Dutch Theudo (a personal name) and horn (jutting piece of land). A different etymology splits the toponym into Proto-Germanic *þeud-þorn (thorny burgh for the people). Compare Dieteren.
