Borrowed from the Malé Latin form of Dhivehi ދަނބިދޫ (daᵐbidū), from earlier 𑤞𑤢𑤳𑤝𑤳𑤩𑤳 (dhabuduvu /daᵐbuduvu/), ultimately from Sanskrit जम्बुद्वीप (jambudvīpa, “Rose-apple island”).
