Democrat (plural Democrats)

1. (politics) A proponent of democracy.
2. (politics) A member or supporter of a democratic party.
3. (US politics) A member or supporter of the Democratic Party in the United States.

     Gore: "I think the real difference between Governor Bush and I is that he is in fact a Republican, and I am currently a Democrat."
     Moderator: "That doesn’t really answer the question, I am talking about issues."

1. (US politics, proscribed, derogatory, offensive) Of or belonging to the Democratic Party in the United States.

• As an adjective, especially in the phrase Democrat Party, it is often used pejoratively and epithetically. This usage is also proscribed in favor of Democratic. Adjectival use carries a strong connotation of political conservatism.
