First attested as dheste in 997. Etymology unknown. Of non-Germanic origins Proposed etymological relationships with does (mossy peat, light turf, overgrown swampland) and hees (undergrowth, brushwood) do not have any basis in reality. Compare Diessen, Diest and Duisburg.
