Etymology

From Latin dasypus cucurbitinus (“gourd-like rabbit”), a mistaken calque of Classical Nahuatl āyōtōchin (armadillo), as though it were from ayohtli (gourd) + tōchin (rabbit); in fact it is from āyōtl (tortoise) + tōchin (rabbit).

Proper noun

Dasypus m

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Dasypodidae – the long-nosed or naked-tailed armadillos.
