From Latin dasypus cucurbitinus (“gourd-like rabbit”), a mistaken calque of Classical Nahuatl āyōtōchin (“armadillo”), as though it were from ayohtli (“gourd”) + tōchin (“rabbit”); in fact it is from āyōtl (“tortoise”) + tōchin (“rabbit”).
