Etymology
New Latin genus name, from Latin crocuta (“hyena ?”), borrowed from Ancient Greek κροκόττας (krokóttas, “crocotta”, first attested in Strabo's Geographica, where the animal is described as being a mix of wolf and dog native to Ethiopia), which may have been a borrowing from Sanskrit.
