From older Cezair, from Ottoman Turkish جزائر (Cezâyir), from Arabic اَلْجَزَائِر (al-jazāʔir, the islands), plural of جَزِيرَة (jazīra, island), referring to the several small islands that once existed in the Bay of Algiers.
