Possibly from unattested Middle High German *buo, *bue and Old High German *buo (“knave”), from Old High German Buobo, a male name of unknown meaning. Cognates include German Bub, Bube, Dutch boef (“villain”), Norwegian boa. Probably also related to boy; see there for more.
